Ethel uses painting as a way to investigate phenomena which capture her interest. She brings grace and a sense of humour to her work, and gives life to inanimate objects, whereby chairs become people, and buildings, penises.
Her images are flat and have strong contour lines and speak of the city. Many of her paintings are finished without backgrounds, allowing us to concentrate on the physical forms of her minimalist figures, and to draw our attention to their actions and positions more than their emotions.
